Apparently this is the #1 tourist attraction in all of Japan. Somewhat hard to believe because it's definitely not the best, but part of the reason is that Osaka is the 2nd or 3rd biggest city in Japan, and there's really nothing else worth seeing there. So everyone who visits Osaka goes to the castle. It's still a very interesting castle and definitely worth checking out, however I just think being #1 in all of Japan is unwarranted. I can think of several other places I have seen that I would recommend first.Anyways, it was originally built in the 16th century, but destroyed several times over the years during wars. The current version was built from concrete in 1931, and survived the heavy bombing Osaka received during World War II.
You can go inside all the way to the top on the 8th floor, and you can get a spectacular view of the city in every direction. I went there early on a Sunday morning, and it was overrun with busloads of Chinese tourists.
The bottom picture shows the south moat, and how difficult it would be for intruders to scale the walls.

Hey Jase, you gotta post some pictures of your own castle. While it's nice to see the big tourist spots you visit, it would also be interesting to know what your day to day life is like in another country.
(Maybe that picture from your balcony got me excited for more...)
Yeah, those big, showy pics are great, but it would be good to see details.
